Air-Conditioning for Malaysian Homes: Sizing, Placement and Piping

by admin | Oct 20, 2026 | Uncategorized

Air-conditioning is usually excluded from the renovation quotation and arranged separately, which is why it is so often installed badly — nobody owned the decision at design stage. Getting it right during renovation costs very little extra; retrofitting it afterwards means chasing finished walls.

## Sizing is not guesswork

Capacity should follow the room: floor area, ceiling height, glazing area and orientation, the number of people typically in it, and heat-producing equipment. A west-facing bedroom with a large window needs more capacity than an identical north-facing one.

Undersized units run continuously and never dehumidify properly. Oversized units cool fast, cut out, and leave the room cold but clammy — they short-cycle before removing moisture, which is why an oversized unit in Malaysia feels worse, not better.

## Placement decides comfort

Air should reach the occupied part of the room without blowing directly onto a bed or a desk. Avoid mounting above a door where airflow is short-circuited, or in a corner where half the room never sees movement.

Plan the condenser position at the same time. It needs clearance for airflow, access for servicing, and a location where its noise and hot discharge do not sit outside a bedroom window — yours or your neighbour's. In a stratified building, condensers usually must go on the designated ledge, and that constraint should shape the indoor layout rather than being discovered late.

## What to do while the walls are open

Run the refrigerant pipework, drain and power concealed. Concealed piping looks vastly better than trunking down a finished wall, and this is the only moment it is cheap.

Two details matter more than people realise. The condensate drain needs a continuous fall to a proper discharge point — a flat or back-falling drain overflows into your ceiling, and that is the source of a large share of "ceiling leaks" we are called to investigate. And refrigerant pipe insulation must be complete and sealed, because bare pipe sweats heavily in our humidity and soaks whatever is above.

## Provide access

Wherever a concealed joint, drain or unit sits above a ceiling, put an access panel there. A ceiling with no access means demolition the first time anything needs attention.
