Education projects have one constraint that outranks everything else: children must not be anywhere near the works, and the works must be finished before term resumes. A school renovation in Malaysia is therefore planned around the calendar first and the drawings second. Every school renovation in Malaysia lives or dies on holiday scheduling. Everything about the programme follows from that.
A school renovation in Malaysia: the window is the school holiday
Most classroom and facility works in Malaysia are compressed into term breaks. That means a programme built backwards from the first day of term, with material procured and delivered before the break begins, and float built in for the discoveries that always follow opening up an older building.
What education clients most often need
- Classroom refurbishment: flooring, ceiling, lighting, fans and air-conditioning, whiteboard and storage joinery
- Acoustic treatment, particularly in halls and open-plan learning areas
- Laboratory and workshop upgrades with specialist services and ventilation
- Toilet block refurbishment, which is invariably the highest-wear area in any school
- Accessibility improvements: ramps, handrails, accessible sanitary facilities
- Roof and waterproofing works to buildings that have been patched for years
Specification decisions that pay off
Specify for wear, not for appearance. A school corridor sees more traffic in a week than a home does in a year. Impact-resistant wall finishes, robust ironmongery, commercial-grade flooring and serviceable fittings cost more once and save repeatedly.
Lighting and acoustics deserve more attention than they usually get. Glare on a whiteboard and reverberation in a hard-surfaced classroom both affect learning, and both are cheap to solve at design stage.
Safety and segregation
If any part of the school remains occupied, full physical segregation of the works, separate contractor access away from student routes, and controls on deliveries during arrival and dismissal are the baseline. Contractor personnel screening is a reasonable requirement and should be discussed at tender.
