Air-conditioning is the expensive way to solve a problem that design can partly solve for free. Every degree you keep out of the building is a degree you are not paying TNB to remove, for the next twenty years. Passive cooling for Malaysian homes does exactly that, for free. Good passive cooling for Malaysian homes starts at the design stage of a renovation.
Passive cooling for Malaysian homes: where the heat gets in
- The roof. The single largest gain in a Malaysian house. An uninsulated roof space radiates into the rooms below all afternoon and well into the night.
- West-facing glazing. Late afternoon sun through an unshaded west window heats a room faster than anything else.
- Unshaded walls. Masonry absorbs heat through the day and releases it after dark.
What works during a renovation
Roof insulation and a ventilated roof space. Insulation plus ventilation to let accumulated hot air escape. This is the highest-return intervention available in most Malaysian houses, and it is straightforward while the ceiling or roof is already open.
External shading on the west and east. Overhangs, fins, louvres and planting. Shading glass on the outside is far more effective than any curtain inside, because once the heat is through the glass it is already in the room.
Cross ventilation. Openings on opposite sides of a space so air actually moves through. Many renovations unintentionally block the original cross-ventilation path with new partitioning.
High-level ventilation. Hot air rises. Openings at high level let it leave, which is why stairwell and void openings make a real difference in a double-storey house.
Light external colours and reflective roofing. Less absorption to begin with.
Ceiling fans everywhere. Moving air raises the temperature at which a room is comfortable, which means the air-conditioning set point can be higher.
The honest limit
Passive design will not eliminate air-conditioning in the Malaysian climate. It will substantially reduce how hard and how often it runs, which is where the saving is. The measures above are cheap while the roof and ceiling are open and expensive as standalone jobs later.
