Choosing kitchen cabinet materials in Malaysia is really about how the carcass handles heat and steam. The carcass is. In a Malaysian wet kitchen the carcass sits in heat, steam and the occasional flood from a leaking trap, and the material you choose there decides whether the cabinet lasts three years or fifteen.
Kitchen cabinet materials in Malaysia: the carcass options
Particleboard (chipboard). Cheapest. Swells irreversibly with water and does not hold screws well after disassembly. Acceptable for a dry kitchen in a low-use household, poor for a wet kitchen.
MDF. Denser and better for painted and moulded door profiles. Still a wood-fibre product that swells when saturated, though moisture-resistant grades perform better.
Plywood. The mainstream choice for Malaysian wet kitchens. Handles occasional wetting far better, holds hardware well, and marine-grade or treated plywood improves matters further.
Aluminium. Impervious to water and termites, long-lasting, easy to clean. Colder in appearance, limited door finish options compared with timber products, and a higher initial cost.
Matching material to zone
Use the durable option where the water and heat are — under the sink, in the wet kitchen — and the more decorative option in the dry kitchen where appearance leads. There is no rule requiring one material throughout, and mixing is usually the better value.
What decides longevity beyond the carcass
- Hardware. Hinges and runners take the daily punishment. Quality hardware in a modest carcass outlasts poor hardware in an expensive one.
- Edge banding. Unsealed edges are how water gets into any board product. Check the banding on every edge, including the concealed ones.
- Countertop and sink detailing. Most under-sink failures come from a poorly sealed sink cut-out, not from the cabinet material.
- Legs and plinth. Adjustable legs keeping the carcass off the floor mean a wet floor does not become a wet cabinet.
Ask for the carcass material, the board thickness, the hardware brand and the edge banding specification in writing. A quotation that lists only "kitchen cabinet" and a price is not comparable to anything.
